Thirty-five years ago, Peter Gloucester – head of the Gurdjieff Institute in the UK — placed
Thornton Wilder’s novel The Woman of Andros in my hands and told me it would make a good play. He hadn’t said it casually: he’d just spent three weeks coming to every performance of my adaptation of The Strange Life of Ivan Osokin at the New End Theatre in London.

Wilder asks a question that has never dated: what does it mean to truly inhabit a life, rather than merely pass through it? This September, my stage adaptation arrives at The Tank Theatre in New York City, directed by Meghan Finn, The Tank’s Artistic Director
— the first professional stage adaptation of Wilder’s novel, in front of an invited audience of New York artistic directors and literary managers.

Bringing this production to the stage is my attempt at an answer. With a ticket to The Golden Drawing, it becomes partly yours too.
